“And then we got a divorce. She kept the house, I took the LEGO”

Jan’s quote during the first episode of LEGOMASTERS stood out. Several newspapers copied his remarkable words and people on Twitter commented on it.

Although it may have sounded like a joke, the reality is: that is how we got through the divorce. Sure, there was crying and shouting, blame and calling names. We’re only human.

But in the end, what dominated was gratitude for what we had, not bitterness for what we lost.

2,5 years A.D.

“Are we actually going to do this?” We look at each other in disbelief. “Are you sure?”

“Positive – hit the send-button!”

We giggle. The invitation to our divorce party has just been sent.

A true bachelor’s party

Subject: bachelor’s party

Dear all,

divorce party

The paperwork is nearly done, the LEGO has moved, the house decorated to Lola’s liking. Time for a drink.

We would love to bring out a toast with you to the wonderful time we had together. Say cheers to the love between us, the support we got from our families, the friends we made. Share a drink to celebrate the wonderful trips, surviving a home renovation and all the lessons learned. Give thanks to whoever has helped us over the last months, in practical ways or emotionally. We want to raise the glass to each other and our new friendship.

Are you in?

With love,

Bachelor & bachelorette,

Jan and Lola

Some thought it was a joke. Others refused to join the festivities. But most knew how to appreciate it.

We danced, we drank, we sang.
I didn’t even cry (can you imagine?!).

Close the chapter

It is incredibly important to take the time to reflect on the past and value what has been.
Close the chapter.
In doing so, you make way for the future. This is true not only for relationships with others but for everything that happens in your life. Divorce, sickness, loss, violence, financial setbacks, injuries.
By giving meaning to such events you grow as a person and allow yourself to move on.

I’d like to hear from you. What chapter of your life are you in now, that you’d like to close? And: ever been to a divorce party?
