8 days B.C.

Thursday morning, the alarm goes off at 07:30. I don’t get up right away – I love snoozing. It’s still dark outside, the waterbed is warm and comfortable. I know the floor will be cold and I want to wait as long as possible before I place my feet there. J. is snoring softly beside me. He doesn’t snore, he says. Still half asleep, I place my arms across my body, hands in the opposite armpit. Knees pulled up to my chest, full hedgehog-during-hibernation-pose.

That’s when I feel it.

A tiny lump in my right breast.

I forget about the cold floor and snoozing – I’m up and awake. Ever since J. was diagnosed with a brain tumor months after he noticed the first signs, we are super cautious when it comes to abnormalities in our bodies.

Within an hour I’ve made an appointment with my doctor.

Within two hours his assistant is inspecting my upper body.

Within three hours I’m back home with a referral for a check-up at the hospital – just to be sure.

I’m only 28 years old. It doesn’t run in the family. There are no signs of malignancies. No symptoms indicating anything serious.

It’s probably a cyst.

A clogged milk duct.

An infection.

Due to the menstrual cycle.

It’s probably nothing.

I found the lump by accident. Do you do regular breast self-examination?
